Around November 19, 1944, heavy fighting took place near the French Cross (that's what the American war diaries say) and a day later the Laufenburg was the scene of bitter fighting. German soldiers who stayed at the castle inflicted considerable losses on the Americans. The inhabitant of the castle, who was also staying at the castle with his family, holed up in the cowshed. Eventually, the Americans managed to encircle the castle and set it ablaze with tank fire. Ultimately, on November 21, 1944, the German defenders gave up and were taken captive.
