Stop for a moment and remember the many victims who lost their lives here during the Nazi era. A stone reminds us that this time must never be forgotten.

At this location, in Schandelah-Wohld, the Schandelah subcamp of the Neuengamme concentration camp was built in May 1944. Up to 800 male prisoners from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia were forced to mine oil shale under inhumane conditions. The company "Steinöl GmbH" had a factory built here to extract oil. The prisoners were men who had resisted the National Socialist tyranny and the occupation of their homeland by the German Wehrmacht. They fought for their lives, for their human dignity and their freedom. (Victor Malbecq, born 1925, member of the Belgian resistance, imprisoned in Schandelah)

The memorial is already sufficiently described. If you continue on the path you also reach the kiln skeleton from time. Further in the direction of the forest is the old cemetery on the right side. Time to look past these two points interesting. The majority of visitors usually leave it at the actual memorial site on the street.
