Dahlhausen station has existed in its current form since 1917. Previous buildings on the route from Essen-Steele to Hattingen and Herdecke had become too small. The reception building was decommissioned in 1979 and restored in Art Nouveau style in 1994.

In addition to S-Bahn trains, museum trains from the Ruhrtalbahn and the shuttle service to the railway museum stop in Dahlhausen.
