The cathedral in Varna is one of the landmarks of the city. It is located on the square "Hl. Cyril and Methodius in the city center. Prince Alexander I of Battenberg (1857 - 1893) laid the foundation stone for the church in 1880. After the water-consecration, the prince pardoned all prisoners of the Varna prison who had been given three months' imprisonment. The name of the Cathedral "Uspenie Presvyatia Bogoroditsi" (Dormition of the Blessed Virgin) was chosen in memory of the Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna, a Bulgarian benefactress and aunt of the prince.The foundation was built according to the design of the architect Maas from Odessa. The building itself comes from the plans of community architect P. Kupka. The construction was financed mainly by donations. In addition, 150,000 lots of 2 leva each were sold domestically and abroad as part of a raffle.
As part of the construction work, the master builders are modeled on the Peterhofs Church in St. Petersburg and use local materials. The roof and the domes are covered with copper sheet. At the beginning of October 1885 the church construction is finished.
In 1949, the painting of the church begins. In the 60s of the XX. At the turn of the 20th century, the colored glass for the large windows was made into a square.
In the period 1999-2002, the church is provided with a ventilation system, the murals are restored. In 2001, the church receives a community-funded, unique outdoor lighting that brings out the beauty of the cathedral in the evening. In 2002 the renewal of the domes is completed. The entire roof construction is finished with materials containing silver and gold.

Beautiful cathedral in the center of Varna, a look inside is definitely worth it! Here is also a good starting point for walks through the center, z. B. To stroll along the pedestrian area.
