Chalon-sur-Saône is a town worth a detour: it is known for its Nicéphore Niepce museum, inventor of photography, but also for its “Chalon dans la rue” festival, which hosts street shows every year in July.
Its old town, around Place Saint-Vincent and its cathedral, has many half-timbered houses where it is pleasant to stroll.

Chalon sur Saône is a great stop along the EuroVelo 6 bike route: known as the birthplace of photography documented in the Nicéphore Niepce museum, who invented photography, in July more people come for the “Chalon dans la rue” festival, which hosts street shows every year; check here for updates: chalondanslarue.com
The old town around the the cathedral preserves many half-timbered houses and is a great place for a break from biking. Chalon in the 19th century was best known for its most famous resident, the inventer Nicéphore Niépce. The museum on the Quai des Messageries shows some early photography relics, preserves more than two million photographs and many old artefacts such as cameras and other equipment for old and modern photography. Also on display are Niépce's 1807 Pyréolophore which is probably the world's first internal combustion engine, plus his 1818 implementation of a dandy horse, for which he coined the word vélocipède (a bicycle forerunner).
According to Wikipedia the city site (ancient Cabillonum) was a capital of the Aedui and objects of La Tène culture have been retrieved from the bed of the river here, but the first mention of Cavillonum is found in Caesar's Gallic Wars. The Roman city already served as a river port and hub of road communications, of the Via Agrippa and side routes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalon-sur-Sa%C3%B4ne

Chalon-sur-Saone is always worth a visit!
Whether on foot or by bike, there is always something new to discover!
In addition to the permanent collection, the Museum Nicéphore Niépce also regularly exhibits changing exhibitions, in which the most diverse photographers, historical and contemporary, are presented.
When I am in Chalon, I always try to make a detour to this museum.
Also very nice, the art museum Denon!
I also like to walk along the "Quais" and admire the lovingly restored old barges rebuilt in houseboats, to chat with the proud owners, the history of their boats and their adventures on the French or even European waterways to be told.
And those who are in the area in July should not miss the festival "CHALON DANS LA RUE"!
Street music, street theater, photography exhibitions, (street) painting ... not only for watching, but also for participation, just a wonderful!

From the 6th of July 2018 you can discover the program here:
