The Canal du Rhone à Sète begins in Beaucaire. Because of this location, it was an important trading town and grew rich in the process. Many beautiful buildings bear witness to this. The medieval castle, which watches over the old town high up from a mountain, was built in the 11th century and later in the 17th century. largely demolished by Richelieu. The castle was then the residence of the Counts of Toulouse and the lords of Beaucaire. Today only the polygonal tower, the round angled tower, the curtains and the Romanesque chapel bear witness to the glorious times of the former magnificent building. (Source: France-Voyage)

The streets and squares of Beaucaire are lined with beautiful town houses and town palaces from the 17th and 18th centuries. There is a nice little harbor on the canal. Unfortunately there is a lot of car traffic in the city today

The Rhône to Sète canal, originally a strategic connection for transport, today is dominated by tourist traffic.
The canal has linked the Etang de Thau at the height of Sète to the Rhône to Beaucaire since 1811. Beyond the Thau, it is extended by the Canal du Midi. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canal_du_Rh%C3%B4ne_%C3%A0_S%C3%A8te
The ViaRhôna bike trail splits between the western branch that follows this canal and thus leaves the actual Rhône river, and the eastern branch that follows the main river on the edge of the Camargue delta and reaches the Mediterranean Sea at Port-Saint-Louis.
