Bike Touring Highlight
As a replacement for the swing bridge, a pedestrian tunnel was built between 1962 and 1965.The actual tunnel tube is 131 m long, the height difference of about 28 m to the ground level is overcome with two escalators each of 55.9 m (travel time two minutes) and a lift on each side of the canal. This tunnel is located near the location of the former swing bridge.

The tunnel is the Kiel Canal underpass for pedestrians and cyclists. It is accessible by elevator and escalators. At the south portal there is a Greek restaurant, an ice cream parlor, a doner kebab and a restaurant with German cuisine. On the northern side, the Conventgarten (restaurant and hotel) and an ice cream parlor right in front of the escalator.

The pedestrian tunnel was built close to the location of the former swing bridge. Its tube passes under the canal, is 131 m long and is 28 m lower than its entrance. On each side of the canal there are two escalators and a lift.
It offers pedestrians and cyclists a very good opportunity to underpass the Kiel Canal (Kiel Canal). In particular, since the transporter ferry has been out for a long time and will fail. It is still a special experience to drive or to go through the tunnel.
I remember very well that in 1965, after the opening as a child, I had often "played" here and with increasing enthusiasm I went up and down the super-long escalators. The lifts were of course an absolute highlight -

The pedestrian tunnel connects Rendsburg and Westerrönfeld / Rendsburg Süd and is an important connection for all students who live sweetly on the canal and want to cycle to school in Rendsburg. Due to the long waiting times at the elevator, most students use the escalator in the morning and at noon.
