The pleasure and hunting manor Appelhof, which was composed of several farms and estates, was since the 15th century successively in the possession of Nuremberg patricians (Holzschuher), Bavarian dukes and various middle-class families, until around 1720 by the Allersberg manufacturer and famous Rococo master builder Jacob Gilardi was acquired.

The site has been known as an estate since the 15th century. In 1457 it belonged to Duke Ludwig of Bavaria, then to various Nuremberg patrician families. The present castle was built around 1760 by the Allersberg factory owner Jacob Gilardi and served his family as a summer residence. It bears the signature of the architect Gabriel de Gabrieli; it is not known whether he was actually the builder. In 1889 it was acquired by the pencil manufacturer Lothar von Faber and is still owned by the Faber-Castell family to this day.

The rococo palace has a long and varied history. Around 1720, the Allersberg wire baron Gilardi acquired the property. Gilardi had the castle built around 1760, called it "Fressgütlein" and created a connection to his estate in Allersberg via an avenue of linden trees.
In 1889 Baron Lothar von Faber acquired the castle. Countess Mariella lived in Appelhof until her death in 1985, and a distant relative lived there until 2011.
Anton Wolfgang Graf von Faber-Castell wanted to breathe new life into the castle in 2015 with concerts and events. However, his death in 2016 led to another standstill.
A resident from the surrounding area bought the castle in 2021 to restore it. However, to this day you can see little change on the outside and the castle is still in a deep slumber.
