In the 1960s, the idea came up for Castrop-Rauxel to create a local center that sets new architectural standards. A competition was held in which well-known architects such as Alvar Aalto and Egon Eiermann participated. The competition was won by Dane Arne Jacobsen.
The complex on Europaplatz consists of the town hall, the council chamber, the town hall, the Europahalle and a restaurant.
