Goddess of the Wind was created especially for Nieuwpoort in 2002 by painter and sculptor Antoon Luyckx. The artwork depicts a woman, gazing out to sea, waiting, hoping, thinking of a further destination. Numerous interpretations are possible. Luyckx's works are mainly inspired by nature, folklore and religion. In his sculptures we find the most beautiful examples of stylisation of the ordinary, natural form into a purified abstraction. Originally, Goddess of the Wind had a permanent place on the Loodswezenplein, at the beginning of the Westerstaketsel. In 2014, the sculpture had to make way for Verzoening by Willem Vermandere. After a few years of absence, Goddess of the Wind found a new home in the Maritime Park, where she looks out over the Havengeul. Source: nieuwpoort.be/godin-van-de-wind
