From a distance, the spring's enclosure looks somewhat futuristic. The soil in this area - the Langenbrücken depression - is characterized by pyrite and bitumen-containing layers within the slate rock. The water from the spring therefore contains dissolved, sulfur-containing sodium hydrogen carbonate. Natural redox reactions convert the sulfur into hydrogen sulfide (smell of rotten eggs). The first sip takes some courage if you've smelled the water beforehand 😉 Other springs in the region, e.g. in Bad Schönborn - also contain sulfur. In Östringen, the prefix "Bad" was not used for financial reasons - it would have been too expensive to market the spring.

The sulfur spring is the second station on the Östringer Brunnenweg. The two benches make it a resting place. Nice, quiet location in the forest.

Unfortunately the fountain is out of service until further notice 🤷
