Wenningstedt is one of the most popular holiday resorts on the island of Sylt, especially with families. The place is very centrally located in the middle of the island and offers a long list of sights.
Among the natural attractions of the place is the nature reserve Braderuper Heide. The primeval heathland borders directly on the Schleswig-Holstein Wattenmeer National Park, which is a popular destination for long walks on the mudflats. Wenningstedt's other attractions include the so-called "Denghoog", a passage grave built 5000 years ago in the Neolithic period. The walk-in megalithic grave consists of twelve supporting stones that support a ceiling of three stone slabs. It was opened in 1868 and has been open to visitors since 1928. Also the village pond in the center of Wenningstedt is worth a visit! He is the calming point of the place. To preserve the village charm, adjacent buildings are provided with thatched roofs. Another gem is the Friesenkapelle at the village pond. Idyllically, the red-brick chapel is located on the Wenningstedt village pond. It is the church of the northern villages. A special feature is the vaulted half-moon ceiling with biblical images and symbols in the style of a peasant painting. Another special feature is the Delft tiles, which are supposed to make the Friesenkapelle a place of well-being, the living room of God, in the style of traditional Sylt Frisian houses. Thus, the chapel has a real unique feature. The tiles were handcrafted according to old templates in Delft. The place Wenningstedt is located on the edge of the dune landscape on the Red Cliff. The main tourist attraction is the long sandy beach below the cliff that runs the entire length of the town.
