The Jasmund National Park is characterized by the grandiose chalk coast of the island of Rügen. A wide variety of habitats can be found in it. Including as rare as the flint beaches, the active chalk cliff and the pristine old beech forests.
The Jasmund National Park has an exceptionally wide range of habitats due to the complex effects of climate, relief and soil. The beech forests alone inhabit different variants of nutrient-poor to nutrient-rich and dry to moist locations on chalk. Different types of bog are embedded in the forest like a mosaic, while the chalk plateau is criss-crossed by a network of streams.
Two thirds of the protected area, around 2100 hectares, form the largest contiguous beech forest on the German Baltic Sea coast. The beech forest dissolves on the chalk cliffs of the cliff slopes into a dynamic mosaic of open areas, bushes and real jungle. Due to the steep slopes and the relative inaccessibility, the forests on the cliff slopes were never used for forestry purposes - a stroke of luck for nature.
This diversity of habitats forms the basis for a rich flora and fauna. Particularly noteworthy are the rare orchid species and the giant horsetail. The house martin settles on the slopes of the chalk cliff; Peregrine falcon and sea eagle are regular breeding birds in the Jasmund National Park.
