Neuenberg Castle, also called Neuenburg, is the medieval ruin of a hilltop castle at 250 m above sea level near the village of Scheel, municipality of Lindlar, Oberbergisches Land, North Rhine-Westphalia. HistoryEdit The architectural findings of the castle indicate that it was built in the 12th century. It was first mentioned in a document in 1433. Neuenberg Castle was part of the sovereign's domains and was thus owned by the Counts of Berg. In 1273, the Counts of Berg pledged the Gummersbach bailiwick, which also included Gimborn Castle, to the Counts of Mark. The Leppe River thus became the state border between Berg and Mark, and Neuenberg Castle became a border fortress. Neuenberg Castle was the sovereign property of the Counts of Berg. The map shows the location of Neuenberg Castle in the border area between Berg and Mark During the Thirty Years' War, it was taken over by the Swedes around 1640 as the seat of the Steinbach district.
