24 sailors fought for their lives in the North Sea after their ship ran aground in a storm. The sailors did not survive.

This disaster, however, led to the decision to build a lighthouse in Nørre Lyngvig on Holmsland Klit. Three years later, on November 3, 1906, the yellow flashing light could be seen for the first time far across the North Sea and Ringkøbing Fjord. Many sailor and fishing families breathed a sigh of relief that day.

The lighthouse in Lyngvig is the last in the line of lighthouses along the North Sea coast and, at 38 meters, is also the tallest in Denmark.

A total of 149 steps must be climbed inside the lighthouse, and another
79 steps from the foot of the dune to the lighthouse. For the lighthouse keeper,
that meant a total of 228 steps each time he lit the lantern.
