The St. Nicholas Hospital (short: Cusanusstift) in Bernkastel-Kues is the late Gothic foundation of Nicholas of Kues.
The founder founded the complex on 3 December 1458 as a poor hospital for exactly 33 (after the years of Jesus Christ) single men of nobility (six nobles), clergy (six priests) and bourgeoisie (21 common people). Since the end of the 1960s, women have also been admitted to the old people's home. To this day, the Stift fulfills its task as a nursing home.
The famous library as well as the historic winery have created and maintained a tradition of more than 500 years. The medieval library is a unique collection of manuscripts, including works by Nicholas of Kues himself.
The historic cloister and the chapel of the monastery are further highlights of the complex. The heart of the founder, Cardinal and Bishop of Bressanone, is buried in the chapel of the Cusan's Pen. The complex owes its name to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of skippers and patron saint of the family of Nicholas of Kues.
