To the east of Körnerplatz, on Pillnitzer Landstrasse, is the valley station of the suspension railway. It was built between 1898 and 1900 and is the oldest of its kind in the world. The two cars are moved on wheels along a rail, which in turn rests on steel beams. After a distance of 274 meters, you can reach the viewing platform on the Loschwitzhöhe, which is 84 meters higher, in five minutes.
The Dresden suspension railway went into service on May 6, 1901. 6 years after the neighboring funicular to the “Weißer Hirsch” was built, the altitude of Oberloschwitz could also be accessed. The system is based on the monorail principle of the Cologne engineer Eugen Langen. The carriageway support on which the rail is attached is supported by 32 pendulum supports and one fixed support. The car bodies themselves hang under the rail. The cars are moved by a pull rope. The associated conveyor machine is in the mountain station. Initially powered by a compound steam engine, a direct current motor has been used since 1909. This allows the cars to commute between the mountain and valley stations on the railway, which is unique in the world.

The train is worth seeing, the journey is very short but worth it.
