The Charleroi Canal is an elementary axis of our Brussels landscape. Created for economic reasons in the first half of the 19th century, it aimed to convey raw materials from southern Belgium to Brussels for processing in the myriad factories and industries located along its route.
Having become, over time and with deindustrialisation, a dividing line between neighborhoods and an area of economic gloom, many projects today aim to remake the canal into the "river of Brussels" or at the very least, a link between the different municipalities of Brussels via, in particular, the ambitious CANAL plan.

The Charleroi-Brussels Canal is of historical-geographical importance for the development of coal mines and the metal industry in Belgium. With this route you get a taste of Belgium's past, but you also get to see a few remarkable constructions such as the technological masterpiece the Inclined Plane of Ronquières.
Because the ride runs 100% along the canal, you will not be bothered by climbing meters. The track is not in perfect condition everywhere, but it is paved everywhere.
