The track from Mechtersen to Vogelsen (Landwehr) was removed and converted into a cycle path. Very nice and at the end leads left to Bardowick and right to Vogelsen. To the right you come to the Lüneburger Landwehr, on this tour I turned off at Gut Brockwinkel towards Lüneburg.
You can also continue on the Landwehr to Reppenstedt and wonder where you get out of there. For me that was an aha moment.

Very nice path, along the Landwehrgraben, from Bardowick to Reppenstedt. The Landwehr is easily overlooked and is usually only known to those who live locally.

It is a well-preserved section of the Lüneburger Landwehr archaeological monument that can be walked and cycled.

      Purpose of the Landwehr
The salt town of Lüneburg had the right to stack since 1392. This meant that every traveling merchant in a wide area around Lüneburg first had to bring his goods to Lüneburg in order to “stack” them there, i.e. H. had to offer it for sale before he was allowed to transport it further. Of course the merchants wanted to avoid this and they left the main streets with their carts and tried to go around the city on side paths. In order to prevent merchants from bypassing Lüneburg, land defenses were built to the west and east of the city. The Lüneburg Landwehren thus played an important role in directing trade traffic.

The Lüneburg Landwehr is contemporary history. A bike ride along the Landwehr is always worthwhile.
