In the meantime a rare salt flora has been created by plantings of the biological station Paderborn. In 1997, seeds of 11 plant species were taken from the Sültsoid Nature Reserve, only a few hundred meters away, and sown in the area of the Kütfelsens. Six species have since settled there: real celery, stand-aster, salt bulrush, common salt billowing, salt flake and strawberry clover.

These salt-loving plants - so-called halophytes - today make up the special value of Kütfelsens. Because these species are considered endangered nationwide and are threatened with extinction.

On the Kütfelsen since 2012, there is a salt pansy, which was built by the Sälzerkollegium. The Siedepfanne has a diameter of 2.20 m and weighs about 2 tons. Every year for the Salt Lake Festival on Palm Sunday, the boiling ladle is fired and simmered through the salt collection salt.

The "Kütfelsen" is a unique natural monument in Westphalia and is considered as a geological landmark of the city Salzkotten.

The geologically remarkable Kütfelsen originated from sintered Solemineralien the Unitas source, the oldest source Salzkottens. The partly overbuilt Kütfelsen is about 3-4 m high and has a diameter of about 70 m. On contact with the air, the ocher-bearing Unitas spring deposits a sinterstone, which in the course of time forms the Kütfelsen. The oldest layers are estimated to be 15,000 years old. The Kütfelsen has been a coveted gem for centuries. This was z. B. processed in the Romanesque atrium of Paderborn Cathedral and in the Salzkottener parish church of St. John beheading. Furthermore, a pump house was built on the Kütfelsen in 1554 over the Unitas spring. The well house was built directly above the brine source to provide sufficient protection for the Unitas spring. Above the door of the well house, you can see the old salt coat of arms with two entwined hands and the slogan "Unita durant" - in free translation "Unite survives". In 1980/81 it was lovingly restored with funds from the Westfälisches Amt für Denkmalpflege.

In the immediate vicinity of the well house in 1980 under the direction of the Geological State Office Krefeld a new bore of the brine was carried out. Despite a drilling depth of 118.50 m, the spring has no more artesian lift.

Interesting rock. Nice to see and right on the market square.
