History:

In 1919, the St. Gallen aviation pioneer Walter Mittelholzer (1894-1937) founded the first Swiss airline together with a business partner, which was named Ad Astra Aero AG (Latin for: flying to the stars) from 1920 onwards. Mittelholzer's aircraft took off from St. Gallen's Breitfeld, among others.

This had been used as an airfield since the First World War and was expanded into the actual airfield in 1924. In 1927, the Ad Astra Aero started regular flight connections on the St. Gallen-Zurich-Basel route. The machines primarily transported airmail shipments, but were also able to accommodate some passengers. Over 6,000 spectators attended the opening ceremony on August 7, 1927. In 1931, however, flying on the Breitfeld was over. The airfield was relocated to Altenrhein, where the Dornier works wrote international flight history.
