The Cobb is a stone breakwater that curves out to sea at the western end of the Lyme Regis coast. It shelters the harbour and lifeboat station.
The earliest mention of the Cobb is 1294 but it was probably built before that. The current structure mostly dates to 1817 when it was rebuilt using Portland stone after a severe storm damaged the previous version.
The Cobb appears in both Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion and John Fowles' novel The French Lieutenant’s Woman.
It's a nice place to walk out to on a calm day but you're likely to get soaked or worse if the sea is high.
