At MoorIZ, the Wedemark-Resse moor information center, you can find out everything about the moors in the area. Entry is free, but I recommend leaving a donation there. Because the interesting exhibition raises awareness of the ecological value of these rare natural areas.

All information is available at mooriz.de.

No landscape in Germany contributes as effectively to climate protection as the moors. Lower Saxony is the federal state with the largest moor area in Germany. About a third of all moors in Germany are in Lower Saxony.

Near-natural moors represent valuable CO2 sinks - while drained moors are CO2 ejectors. Around 95% of the moors in Lower Saxony are currently drained. Therefore, 11% of all CO2 emissions in Lower Saxony come from moors.

A current study by the University of Greifswald’s Moor Center from April 2020 comes to the conclusion that postponing moor rewetting over centuries will lead to further global warming. Through rewetting, our moors do not further burden the climate, but become part of the solution of Lower Saxony's climate policy.
