St. Mark's Square is located in the heart of Venice. It measures 180 metres long by 70 metres wide and is the only piazza in Venice, as the rest are piazzales or fields. Its construction began in the 9th century, and it took on its current size and shape in 1177, being paved 100 years later.

St. Mark's Square (Italian: Piazza San Marco) is the "only" square in Venice, and its main tourist destination, teeming with photographers and tourists. The extension from the square to the basin of St. Mark's is known as Piazzetta San Marco, although it is not strictly part of the square.
It is attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte, although some believe it was Alfred de Musset, who nicknamed it le plus élégant salon d'Europe (the most beautiful salon in Europe).
