Like the famous viewpoint of Orrest Head, School Knott is a modest fell above the village of Windermere that rewards with glorious views of the lake and the higher Lakeland Fells. Its prominent top is only a short, yet quite steep amble from the town.
This is an ideal first adventure for little ones, or for a pleasant sunset walk after enjoying dinner in Windermere or Bowness. The skyline to the northwest is unforgettable, with many of the national park’s finest mountains strung across the skyline. It’s not often that such awe-inspiring views can be accessed so quickly from a town centre.
School Knott can be approached from all angles as there are myriad paths, tracks and roads exploring the surrounding countryside. To the east is the slightly higher Grandsire, an upland of heather and bracken that’s little visited. Between the two little summits is the small Schoolknott Tarn, well worth a quick look.
Location: Windermere, South Lakeland, Cumbria, North West England, England, United Kingdom
Like Orrest Head, School Knott's grassy summit reveals stupendous views down onto Windermere (both lake and town) and across the fells of southern and central Lakeland. From here, the craggy citadels of the Langdale Pikes look particularly dramatic. It's difficult to surmount School Knott and not want to immediately head into the mountainous heart of the national park.
