In Borgentreich in the district of Höxter there is a Lourdes grotto that is considered the largest of its kind in Westphalia. In 1900, Maria Fiorentini, sister of the school director Heinrich Fiorentini from Borgentreich, undertook a pilgrimage to France. She deeply impressed the locals for a replica of the Grotto of the Apparitions. Together with the sculptor Clemens Brilon and active help from the citizens, it was inaugurated in May 1902 in the former municipal quarry.
