This slate quarry, known as the Rodenem quarry, is one of the first places (if you come from the north) where you see primary rocks on the surface. Dating back to the Cambrian period, this rock is a relic of an old quarry in the Rodenem district. The stone was used in many buildings in the region, such as the church of Lembeek, the Malakov tower, the former castle and the bridges over the canal. The rock was explored by geologists. It is an old massif that was formed 500 million years ago. Fossils have even been found to be about 520 million years old. The oldest geological description of this quarry dates from 1847. The quarry already existed in 1730, but little is known about the first exploitation.
