The core of the chapel dates from the first expansion phase of the monastery around 1125. It is thus an originally Romanesque building, but also bears traces of changes from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Used as the dean's chapel at the time of the monastery, the interior of the building was decorated with ornamental paintings in Renaissance forms and with figures of saints on consoles, including one of St. Michael. The building has two turrets on the east side and an arcade with cube capitals (source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Michael_(Comburg)).

This chapel in the monastery gate was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The name (coming from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - on paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword, and occasionally a lance. Michael is - together with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel - one of the four archangels who (according to human imagination) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the saints calendar is September 29th.
