The approx. 800-year-old medieval castle stands on a slate spur above the town of Alken on the Moselle and is therefore a spur castle type.

The castle is still privately owned, but can be visited all year round for a fee

The ruins of Thurant Castle (also Thurandt) stand on a broad slate spur high above the village of Alken on the Moselle. It lies in the district of Mayen-Koblenz (Rhineland-Palatinate) and belongs to the type of spur castles.
