He had inherited a moated castle, but this was not representative enough for Lothar Franz Graf von Schönborn. So he had a magnificent summer residence built for him by the famous master builder Johann Dientzenhofer – Schloss Weissenstein near Pommersfelden. It took seven years to build and fit out the interior of the baroque castle with its huge, magnificent staircase, the marble hall and the Sala Terrena, a hall whose elaborate decorations made of tuff and shells make it look like a grotto.

Schloss Weißenstein was built between 1711 and 1718 under Lothar Franz von Schönborn, the Bamberg Prince-Bishop and Elector of Mainz in Pommersfelden near Bamberg as a private summer residence. It is considered the founding building of the Franconian Baroque and is still owned by the Schönborn family.
