Old pen for the care of leprosy patients in the Middle Ages. Very nice location, with a small oak forest to Ilmenau. Right at the lock left in the Eichwald. Also a filming location of the series "Red Roses".

The earliest written record as "House of the Poor Sick" was in a document from the year 1251. The court belonged to the city of Lüneburg, which housed her lepers outside the city walls here. After the leprosy was contained, the facility was converted into a nursing home. The accommodation was separated by gender. In the 15th century, about 80 people populated the court, half residents of women's and men's house, to the other service and administrative personnel (stewards, pastors, sextons, organists, shepherds, servants and maids). In the early 14th century a chapel and the (old) men's house were built, the provisional (house of the steward) in the 16th century. Around 1700 came another (the new) men's house and the so-called Organistenhaus (actually the pastorate, the actual Organistenhaus was demolished in 1802) added. In 1720/21 the women's shelter was renewed.

The women's shelter is still partially used today in its original function. The Nikolaihof is being redeveloped as part of the Bund-Länder program "Urban Heritage Protection", while the exterior work has already been largely completed.

Bardowick is a proud village. Not only because its asparagus and Thanksgiving - the largest in the entire north - are known far beyond the Lüneburg Heath. But above all, because the Bardowicker look back on a great history. The mighty cathedral and other medieval vestiges testify to the glory of the 6,500-soul community thousands of years ago.

When visiting the Nikolaihof you have to pay attention to the opening times of the library if you want to see the men's house (library), the women's shelter and the church from the inside. The key to the church you get in the library on presentation of the identity card.

        Opening hours of the library:
        Tue and Thu 11:00 - 13:00
        Tue, Wed and Fri 15:00 - 18:00

        The visit is free
