The old water tower was built in 1904 for the city of Barmen. It was originally 46 m high and was in operation until 1984. The new water tower was built in 1983/84 and put into operation in 1985.

The Loh-Hatzfeld Railway ended directly below the water towers.

The old Hatzfelder water tower is a no longer used water tower. The 1904 under the direction of the Barmer city master builder at an altitude of 298 m above sea level. NN built water tank was an important link in the drinking water supply of the then independent city of Barmen. From the community waterworks Volmarstein in Wetter an der Ruhr, also called Barmer waterworks, the water was pumped through the water tower Loh in Volmarstein to Barmen in the Hatzfelder water tower. The railway line Loh-Hatzfeld had its end point under the tower.
