Creag Bheag translates as ‘small rock’ in Gaelic, which might explain why there are two hills bearing this name in the same area. Here, we’re referring to the hill that rises immediately above the town of Kingussie, and to the south of Loch Gynack. The other hill here by this name rises to the north of the town. This Creag Bheag tops out at 1,598 feet (487 m) and is delightfully craggy.
Short and sweet, adventures up Creag Bheag come with an added chance to spy Scotland’s famous red squirrels, some of whom reside in the pine forest that covers the hill’s eastern slopes. You can ascend directly from Kingussie and it’s a steep but fun hill. The slopes above the forest are strewn with heather and bracken, with paths leading you upwards.
When you reach the summit, a clear day will reward you with splendid views over Kingussie and across to the Cairngorms. There are many cairns at the top, but the summit cairn is much larger and has a little seat inside.
An easy Loop from the town to reach this Marilyn. There are a few cairns on the top, the true summit being the one built like a trig pillar closer to the south west.
