The Haune rises in the Hessian Rhön Nature Park and in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve in the Milseburg Kuppenrhön, a western part of the Rhön.
Its source is in the Fulda district around 2 km east of the Künzell district of Dietershausen on the west flank of the Giebelrain mountain (approx. 590 m above sea level) – at an altitude of around 480 m.
The inscription on a plaque at the Haunequelle reads:
"MY NAME IS HAUNE, I EAT THE FULDA, I SAY THE WESER, I FLOAT TO THE NORTH SEA"
