The Klimenshorn is a beautiful pre-peak of the Pilatus. The view of Lake Lucerne is beautiful from up here. Of course, you are never alone on the summit when the weather is good, but it is much quieter than up on the Pilatus, so it is nice to visit this summit before climbing and share the hiking/mountain feeling with like-minded people before climbing up to the tourist area.

I climbed the Klimenshorn from the Eigental. The path from Oberlauelen up to the Klimenshorn is quite steep and it is amazing how quickly you gain height as you climb. You do need a head for heights for the path, it is secured with chains in some places, you have to climb a staircase and climb some rocky passages with big steps or a little scrambling. When it is wet, these rocky passages in particular can be slippery. In front of the Klimenshorn near the chapel there is a beautiful fenced-in area that is often used for bivouacking, picnicking, or as a breather before the final ascent to the summit of Pilatus.

The path from Oberlauelen to the Klimsenhorn is in the shade in the morning and is therefore ideal for hot summer days. When there is snow, there is a high risk of avalanches due to the steep terrain and this should be avoided.

Extremely nice hike. The best way to reach Kriens is to be on the go, and you can come down the gondola again if it gets too much. We went up to Fräkmüntegg high, from train station Kriens are about 900 meters and 2 hours distance. From there we went by cable car to the top of Pilatus, and again to Fräkmüntegg down (that was about 500 meters in altitude - However, this time significantly high alpine: difficulty level T4, sometimes there are via ferrata sections, good hiking equipment is mandatory for this section, and we were with all-terrain Flat Coated Retriever on the way, but I would not recommend this route for a Bernese Sennehund) ... Then from Fränkmüntegg again with the small gondolas to the base station shut down. That was 4 hours hiking time, about 1500 meters in altitude, and in total (including gondola rides and mini-breaks on the mountain without stopping) we were about 6 hours on the road. Absolutely recommended hike with spectacular views, and if you start early in the morning there are also great rest stops on the way, and on the summit. I was surprised how little the tourists finally bothered me, since they are hardly found in the mountains, so they spend a lot of time on the summit via gondola, but we simply did not stay there long ....
