The Hartmannswillerkopf is one of the four great national monuments of the First World War. Composed of an altar, a cemetery and a crypt, it is also distinguished by its unique setting overlooking the plain of Alsace.

The Crypt (Ossuary) is a memorial and a place of reconciliation. The bones of 12,000 fallen soldiers of both sides find their last rest here. The number of losses at the HWK varies. The most reliable estimate is about 30,000 soldiers. From 1914 to 1915 was attempted by multiple offensives to break the front line. With the German advance at Verdun and the British offensive on the Somme in 1916, the front froze in Alsace. Early on, therefore, there were soldiers' graves at this point, the present Ńecropole.
