The Puerta de San Gil is part of the set of walls that King Alfonso X the Wise ordered to be built in 1276 and whose works were completed in the 14th century. The original door was profoundly modified in the mid-16th century and in the 18th century. In its surroundings there are still remains of an old cube and the Nativity chapel of the church of San Gil, which rests on the remains of the old wall.
