Mountain Biking Highlight
Greifenstein Castle once stood high above the deeply incised Holzelfinger valley and on mighty rocks. All that remains of the former proud castle are the remains of the wall. The main part of the castle was the keep - a strong tower that rose directly behind the moat. Everything crowded together there, housing, fortifications, storage and prison. What has remained is the wonderful view of the surrounding area.

Greifenstein Castle is a group of castles consisting of the Obergreifenstein and Untergiffenstein castles. You are on a rock at 755 m above sea level. NHN above the Holzelfinger valley near the municipality of Lichtenstein in the Reutlingen district in Baden-Württemberg.
The Höhenburg was built by the Knights of Greifenstein in the 12th century to secure the surrounding valleys, destroyed in Reutlingen in 1311 and owned by Württemberg in 1355. Remains of the ring wall are still preserved from the former castle of Obergreifenstein, whose keep was located directly behind the moat and around which the apartment, warehouse and dungeon crowded. About 150 m west of it, small remains of the wall and ditches can still be seen from the Untergiffenstein Castle, which is located on a narrow rock.

The ruin was my goal today. It was worth it. The trails are relatively easy to ride. No special skills required. There are a few places (e.g. the ruin) where you have a nice view. I can absolutely recommend it. There is seating and even a fireplace in the ruin.
