Sterkrade was almost exclusively Catholic until the 19th century. That changed with industrialization and the influx of workers and their families. First, the Jacobi, Haniel & Huyssen steelworks union provided a drawing room in the factory for Protestant services, then collections were made to build a church. The Peace Church was built between 1850 and 1852.
