The village of GRUORN in the Swabian Alb no longer exists today. It was completely cleared in 1939 to expand the training area MÜNSINGEN, the residents were resettled. The Stephanus church is next to the school building the only remaining structure, which reminds of the former village Gruorn.

In the schoolhouse there is an economy and a museum. The schoolhouse is usually open from Easter to All Saints Day.
The opening hours are from Wednesday to Sunday from 11.30 to 16.00. Monday and Tuesday are days off (except public holidays).
In the economy there are simple, regional dishes, drinks, coffee and cake.

In winter there is not so much to do. But it is still interesting and you can pause on covered seating.

Old schoolhouse is not right. The first and old schoolhouse was located directly at the entrance to the church.

In 1937 the Münsingen military training area was expanded, 665 inhabitants had to leave the village of Gruorn. The square was used for military purposes until 1992. It is thanks to an initiative of former Gruorns that at least the school house and the church have been preserved.
A small village museum is set up in the school building. There is a small restaurant in summer. Be sure to inquire about opening times beforehand.
Stained glass windows have been installed in the church in recent years.
Guided tours through the town and the military training area are possible with prior notice.
Occasional concerts take place in the church.

It is a very well-kept area. Church and cemetery. There is a very nicely decorated restaurant in the old school house. Very friendly operator. Appealing tasting offer. It is definitely worth a detour. 👍

If you don't want to "just" make a short stopover in Gruorn, but also something about the history of this former TrpÜb square and its special significance for the biodiversity in the Schwäb biosphere area. Alb wants to experience, it is well advised to visit the Biosphere Center in Münsingen-Auingen: Biosphärenallee 2-4; 72525 Münsingen-Auingen; Telephone 07381 / 93298-31; Opening times (depending on the season) & entrance fees ==> schwaebischealb.de/attractions/biosphaerenzentrum-schwaebische-alb

Gruorn is located in the western area of the former military training area and can be reached on foot or by bike via designated paths. Along the historical circular route through Gruorn, you can follow the traces of the former village.
