Solenice Hydropower / Steinbach DamFor many years, an active exchange has been maintained between the two partner communities of Solenice and Herrstein, with mutual visits. Solenice is located on the Vltava River, about 80 km south of Prague. The nearby Orlík Dam (also known as the Worlik Dam in Czech, Orlická přehrada) is the largest dam in the Czech Republic with a total storage capacity of 720 million cubic meters (for comparison: the Steinbach Dam has a capacity of around 4.8 million cubic meters) and is part of the Vltava Cascades, a system of several dams along the river. The Orlík Dam was inaugurated in 1963. The reservoir and hydroelectric power plant serve to generate energy and provide flood protection. The hydroelectric power plant has four Kaplan turbines, each with a capacity of 150 cubic meters per second and 4 x 91 MW of electrical power. The average flow rate is 83 cubic meters per second. In 2018, approximately 198,000 MWh were produced, supplying approximately 80,000 households with electricity. The electricity produced here is even delivered as far away as Bavaria.
