Since the old border between Hessen-Cassel and Hessen-Darmstadt meanders through our homeland, these striking boundary stones from the 16th and 17th centuries can be found in many places.

The Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel came into being in 1567 through an inheritance of the Landgraviate of Hesse. In his will, Landgrave Philip I ordered that Hesse be divided among his four sons by the main marriage.[2] He thus sacrificed the unity of the country to family considerations. Wilhelm IV, who as the eldest son of Philip I would have been the sole heir without a will of division, received about half of the territory including the capital Kassel with Hesse-Kassel. Hesse-Marburg, Hesse-Rheinfels and Hesse-Darmstadt emerged from the territories of his three brothers. Since the Hesse-Rheinfels line of male succession had already expired in 1583, the territory was divided between Hesse-Kassel, Hesse-Darmstadt and Hesse-Marburg. The Hesse-Marburg line also died out in 1604, so that only the two land counties of Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Darmstadt were to remain in existence for a longer period of time. Only with the founding of the federal state of Hesse in 1945 could the division of Hesse be overcome.
