A big old ruined castle with plenty of trails up to and around it. Set just on the edge of the coast in beautiful surroundings on a remote headland only accessible on foot. It's like a jigsaw puzzle as you run by it; it looks different from every angle.

The castle is maintained by English Heritage and was built in 1313 by Earl Thomas of Lancaster, more as a symbol of his opposition to King Edward than as a military stronghold. The earl's rebellion against the king didn't work out and he never made it to the castle and was captured and executed in 1322. Later the castle became a focus of fierce fighting during the Wars of the Roses, and after that, fell into decay.

Keep and eye out for the hoards of butterflies in the long grass on the trails towards Craster - they're gorgeous!
