The Wysburg is said to have been one of the robber castles destroyed by King Rudolf von Habsburg in 1289/90. The castle ruins excavated from 1985 to the present day, consisting of a core and outer bailey with a surrounding wall and ditch system with a total of 1.1 hectares. The archaeological evidence of the castle siege could be provided here with a blide erected at a distance of 380m. The bombardment took place mainly on the western wall, it was the weak point of the defense. Today the castle is looked after by a castle association.

The Wysburg, also popularly known as Altes Schloß, Hohe Waldsburg or Hunnenburg, is located in the northern Franconian Forest foothills or the Thuringian Slate Mountains, approx. 1.5 km north of the small village of Weisbach in the Saale-Orla district.

A lot has happened here. Hard to recognize ... We weren't here for FOREVER ... Back in 1990, the excavations had only just begun, and no replica of the structures were to be seen.
Students from many countries helped with the excavations and research of history in summer camps.

The Wysburg was built as a hilltop castle in the last decades before 1300.
Today it is a legendary castle ruin

The Wysburg is absolutely worth seeing. Especially when you see how great everything has been restored and is still going to be. A really great destination

a very nice, steep ascent - do not choose the easy route!

good instructions if you want to bring down a fortress wall yourself
