The Seeon Abbey and the St. Lambert Abbey Church were founded in 994 by the Count Palatine Aribo I and his wife Adala. It only had modest accommodation for the monks and a small church. Not until the end of the 11th century a new building of the monastery was built in the Romanesque style. However, this building only stood for barely a century, and around 1180 the church, which essentially still exists today, was built with an apse at the end in the east.
The church was rebuilt again at the beginning of the 15th century. by Konrad Pürkhel. The painting of the church with the Renaissance frescoes from 1579 is unique. Also worth seeing is the red marble tombstone by Abbot Hornorat Kolb and the tombstones of the abbots from the 15th and 17th centuries lined up on the walls of the castle chapel. 16th century. In the middle of the room is the donor's grave of Count Palatine Aribo I. This masterful work is attributed to Hans Heider around 1400. The recently renovated cloister can also be visited. The original of the famous "Madonna with Child" 1433 - created by the so-called "Meister von Seeon" - is considered to be one of the most beautiful depictions of Mary with the child from the time of the soft style in the Salzburg art circle. It has been on display in the National Museum in Munich since 1855. A copy has been in the high altar of the Seeon parish church since 1947.

The monastery and the hotel belonging to it is the ideal starting point for a multi-day Chiemsee tour by bike! Very friendly staff and very good food! The right place to really switch off! The rich breakfast buffet in particular provides the necessary energy for extended tours!

Fantastic monastery complex with a wonderful monastery hotel as a starting point for many great bike tours! The swimming area is particularly beautiful for hotel guests and the Klosterbräu is great! After all, none other than Mozart personally brought his beer here! 🍺😋
