The town originated from the Roman base of Bedaium, which served the Romans from around 50 AD as a fortified bridgehead on the long-distance travel route from Salzburg to Augsburg (today's Via Julia). He was also entered as such in the Tabula Peutingeriana. At the end of the 3rd or 4th century, a Roman fort secured the site and the bridge on the site of today's church. Soon after 400 the military withdrew.
