The pedestrian suspension bridge was built in 1893 and is therefore the oldest rope suspension bridge of its kind in Germany. It was built so that the employees of the Volmarstein waterworks could reach the so-called Ruhrinsel more easily. The island is a piece of land between the Ruhr and the Mühlen- or Obergraben, a side arm of the river dammed up by the Harkort power plant.
