Locks 19 and 20 played a part in the fighting for the Charleroi Canal, Bataille de la Rocq on May 17, 1940. The bridge at lock 20 was even blown up preventively by the French. However, the Germans forced a breakthrough through a "passerelle" between locks 19 and 20.
