The infamous Doodendraad stood at this location during the First World War. This fencing served to prevent refugees from fleeing from Belgium to the Netherlands. The various information boards provide a clear picture of the events. An authentic piece of the Death Wire is also available for viewing here.

There are several places in Hamont-Achel where you can find remains of and information about "De doodendraad". There is a well-known one near the abbey, but nearby you will find a sign that points to a second one. There are three in total. From the municipality's site: Hamont-Achel today contains three locations of this death thread: at the Ezel (first established in 2000), a little further in the dunes area of Beverbeek and at the Achelse Kluis, near the monastery gate. It is a unique realization along the former route of the death wire, from the Drielandenpunt in Vaals (Germany) to the Belgian coast. During the First World War, the Germans erected the Death Wire along the entire border between the Netherlands and Belgium. This was a wire barrier where 2000 volts were set up to prevent Belgians from traveling to the Netherlands. A hundred years later, this wire has not been forgotten; a reconstruction was presented to the public in 2015.
