First mentioned in documents in 1315, patron saint's day April 23rd
The St. George's Church, idyllically situated on an island in the Würm in the Steinkirchen district between Gräfelfing and Planegg, is a real gem of our parish. The floor plan of the original Romanesque building, which probably collapsed in 1745, can still be seen. Reconstruction began in 1748 and a richly decorated baroque interior was created. The high altar, a work by J.B. Straub, is remarkable. However, his famous student I. Günther may have already created the two angel figures. In the center of the high altar is an impressive high-quality baroque Mother of God in a halo. The excerpt shows Saint George, to whom the Steinkirchen church is dedicated. The side altars were only rebuilt in 1971 after the emergency church in Planegg was demolished and included the figures of Saint Benno and the Archangel Michael, which were no longer included in contemporary church architecture. The altarpieces show Pope Silvester and Saint Leonhard on the left and Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch on the right. According to legend, the patron saint of the church, Saint George, lived in Asia Minor in the third century and, despite persecution, converted to Christianity and died as a martyr. His strong veneration can be traced back in particular to his iconography, which shows him as a fighter against evil in the form of a dragon. In this way, he symbolically embodies man's fight against the dark and evil in the world. Services are only held in St. George on special occasions such as the patron saint's day and in May for the May devotions. A visit is possible through the church gates.
